Storyline

Mela and Will need our help to restore order to Miss Valerie's animal sanctuary after a storm has left the sanctuary in chaos.

Animals escaped their pens during a big storm over Miss Valerie's animal sanctuary and now they're all mixed up. Her team has managed to corral all of the adult animals back into their pens but needs our help with matching the baby animals to their parents! Students will use their knowledge of similarities in likeness between offspring and their parents to set everything back to right.

3-Dimensional Science

Phenomenon

Baby animals look similar but not exactly like their parents.

Science and Engineering Practices

Planning and Carrying Out Investigations

  • Make observations (firsthand or from media) and/or measurements to collect data that can be used to make comparisons.

  • Make predictions based on prior experiences.

Analyzing and Interpreting Data

  • Use and share pictures, drawings, and/or writings of observations.

  • Use observations (firsthand or from media) to describe patterns and/or relationships in the natural and designed world(s) in order to answer scientific questions and solve problems.

  • Compare predictions (based on prior experiences) to what occurred (observable events).

Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information

  • Describe how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) support a scientific or engineering idea.

Crosscutting Concepts

Patterns

  • Children recognize that patterns in the natural and human designed world can be observed, used to describe phenomena, and used as evidence.

Disciplinary Core Ideas

LS3.A: Inheritance of Traits

  • Young organisms are very much, but not exactly, like their parents and also resemble other organisms of the same kind.

LS3.B: Variation of Traits

  • Individuals of the same kind of plant or animal are recognizable as similar but can also vary in many ways.
