No, No, DugScience – Human Impact on the EnvironmentKindergarten
Storyline
Students help educate a well-meaning but clueless Dug about how his careless actions have damaged a neighborhood environment.
The crew receives a distress call from an Earth neighborhood whose plants are disappearing, the air is turning hazy, and the local creek has become murky, and Dug's space RV is parked right in the middle of it all. Students work through each area to identify and communicate the solution to each problem Dug created.
Phenomenon
Dug is negatively impacting his new neighborhood.
Science and Engineering Practices
Asking Questions and Defining Problems
Ask and/or identify questions that can be answered by an investigation.
Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
Make observations (firsthand or from media) and/or measurements to collect data that can be used to make comparisons.
Make predictions based on prior experiences.
Analyzing and Interpreting Data
Use observations (firsthand or from media) to describe patterns and/or relationships in the natural and designed world(s) in order to answer scientific questions and solve problems.
Compare predictions (based on prior experiences) to what occurred (observable events).
Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
Make observations (firsthand or from media) to construct an evidence-based account for natural phenomena.
Generate and/or compare multiple solutions to a problem.
Engaging in Argument from Evidence
Construct an argument with evidence to support a claim.
Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
Communicate information or design ideas and/or solutions with others in oral and/or written forms using models, drawings, writing, or numbers that provide detail about scientific ideas, practices, and/or design ideas.
Crosscutting Concepts
Cause and Effect
Students learn that events have causes that generate observable patterns. They design simple tests to gather evidence to support or refute their own ideas about causes.
