Multiplication Using Multi-digit Numbers

Students work together to steer the ship and navigate their way across a map.

Each team is getting a different set of information but is solving the same problem in the same way.

• Students need to read the story problem that describes their part of the swarm and discuss with their team how to find the total number of GALs in their group

• Then they will calculate to find the product (This is their 'minimum capacity') and indicate which expression they used

Group A: 27 x 9 = 2,943 GALs

Group B: 128 x 16 = 2,048 GALs

Group C: 28 x 107 = 2,996 GALs

Students will use their minimum capacity to find the combined force from their group of GALs

• First, they will determine the correct expression

• Then they will find the total combined force

• Finally, they will use that calculation to select a material that is strong enough

Group A: 2943 x 800 = 2,354,400 (must choose Quanticite)

Group B: 2048 x 800 = 1,638,400 (must choose Pyrestone)

Group C: 2996 x 800 = 2,396,800 (must choose Quanticite)
