Storyline
Moodoo has conquered an abandoned headquarters on a planet and declared it the capital of his grand empire. Sadly, he has no idea how big any of his rooms are. He has already ordered wildly wrong amounts of carpet, paint, and furniture. The crew reluctantly agrees to help him measure and plan his headquarters. What begins as simple rectangular rooms escalates to oddly-shaped spaces that require students to decompose rectilinear figures into rectangles and add the areas.
Science and Engineering Practices
Asking Questions and Defining Problems
Define a simple design problem that can be solved through the development of an object, tool, process, or system and includes several criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
Developing and Using Models
Develop a model using an analogy, example, or abstract representation to describe a scientific principle or design solution.
Developing and Using Models
Develop a diagram or simple physical prototype to convey a proposed object, tool, or process.
Analyzing and Interpreting Data
Analyze and interpret data to make sense of phenomena, using logical reasoning, mathematics, and/or computation.
Analyzing and Interpreting Data
Use data to evaluate and refine design solutions.
Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking
Describe, measure, estimate, and/or graph quantities (e.g., area, volume, weight, time) to address scientific and engineering questions and problems.
Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
Use evidence (e.g., measurements, observations, patterns) to construct or support an explanation or design a solution to a problem.
Disciplinary Core Ideas
ETS1: Engineering Design
Possible solutions to a problem are limited by available materials and resources (constraints). The success of a designed solution is determined by considering the desired features of a solution (criteria). Different proposals for solutions can be compared on the basis of how well each one meets the specified criteria for success or how well each takes the constraints into account.
