Grades 4-8

Students received information on their screens about Modern Scarecrows. Once reading, they'll discuss new things they learned about scarecrows with their team. This information will come in handy later in the mission.

Students collaborate to set the right threshold of power for the ship.

Students work together to steer the ship and navigate their way across a map.

Each team is "going back in time" to different eras of history to to learn about scarecrows in former time periods. Teams are either assigned Ancient Egypt, Europe during the Middle Ages, and Medieval Japan. After reading, they'll discuss a question with their team and then share information about scarecrows in their era with a student on another team (who learned about a different historical scarecrow).

Teams of students receive different prompts:

• Design a scarecrow for RALF based on what you learned about scarecrows in Ancient Egypt.

• Design a scarecrow for RALF based on what you learned about scarecrows in Europe in the Middle Ages.

• Design a scarecrow for RALF based on what you learned about scarecrows in Medieval Japan.

Teacher reviews data with class and checks to see if designs meet the required rubric. Students then vote on the best solution.
