Brik by BrikDisassembling and Reassembling Objects with Small Pieces2nd Grade
Storyline
RALF needs help rebuilding his block masterpiece after it was ruined by someone whose name we will not mention (it was Cobalt).
The crew will use their knowledge of objects to create new blueprints for RALF using the same pieces he used in his original creation. Students will work in teams to analyze the blocks available and present a new idea for something that RALF could build.
Phenomenon
Objects that are made of small pieces can be taken apart and built into something new.
Science and Engineering Practices
Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
Make observations (firsthand or from media) and/or measurements of a proposed object or tool or solution to determine if it solves a problem or meets a goal.
Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking
Use quantitative data to compare two alternative solutions to a problem.
Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
Generate and/or compare multiple solutions to a problem.
Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
Describe how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) support a scientific or engineering idea.
Communicate information or design ideas and/or solutions with others in oral and/or written forms using models, drawings, writing, or numbers that provide detail about scientific ideas, practices, and/or design ideas.
Developing and Using Models
Develop a simple model based on evidence to represent a proposed object or tool.
Crosscutting Concepts
Energy and Matter
Students observe objects may break into smaller pieces, be put together into larger pieces, or change shapes.
Structure and Function
Students observe the shape and stability of structures of natural and designed objects are related to their function(s).
Disciplinary Core Ideas
PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter
Matter exists as different substances that have observable different properties. Different properties are suited to different purposes. Objects can be built up from smaller parts.
