Storyline

The crew will observe and evaluate how young animals communicate their needs and how the parent animals respond.

Miss Valerie has established a wildlife rehabilitation center and needs the crew's help to understand whether animals are ready to be released into the wild or not. The crew must investigate whether or not the parents and babies have the correct instincts to survive.

3-Dimensional Science

Phenomenon

Parents and offspring have behavior patterns that help offspring to survive.

Science and Engineering Practices

Analyzing and Interpreting Data

  • Use observations (firsthand or from media) to describe patterns and/or relationships in the natural and designed world(s) in order to answer scientific questions and solve problems.

  • Compare predictions (based on prior experiences) to what occurred (observable events).

Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions

  • Make observations (firsthand or from media) to construct an evidence-based account for natural phenomena.

Crosscutting Concepts

Patterns

  • Children recognize that patterns in the natural and human-designed world can be observed, used to describe phenomena, and used as evidence.

Disciplinary Core Ideas

LS1.B: Growth and Development of Organisms

  • Parents and offspring often engage in behaviors that help the offspring survive.

LS1.D: Information Processing

  • Animals sense and communicate information and respond to inputs with behaviors that help them grow and survive.
