Early American Colonies

5th Grade

Students are given a map on their screens called “Harbor”. Students work together as a team to scan different objects on the map and collect information.

Students must answer the following question:

Which colony will best suit our group of people?

Students work together to steer the ship and navigate their way across a map.

Students collect entities from a grid on their computers using a tractor beam device.

Class designs a solution for the prompt, “Design an ad to convince people to come to Jamestown.”

This actually happened!

Any teams that were using gold mining as the reason to come to Jamestown will need to erase and use the new incentives in the text they just received instead. They will also need to highlight the names of the incentives and then discuss the incentives with their teams.

• Headright system: Everyone who pays their own way to the New World receives 50 acres of land. This includes any wealthy person that pays for the passage of another person.

• Indentured servitude: Work for a wealthy family for 4-7 years and receive land and money at the end of the contract

• Tobacco farming: Farm the cash crop, Tobacco, and become wealthy!

"How do you think the colonists felt when they found out all of their hard work amounted to nothing?"

"What adjustments does your team need to make now that we know the gold is fake?"

Teacher reviews data with class and checks to see if designs meet the required rubric. Results are then revealed to the class.
